Description of This Service:
The assigned Tutor spends time in learning/studies with a tutee. Tutors have the opportunity to help students on a one-on-one basis outside of the regular classroom. An after-school tutor's job is to meet students wherever they are and provide them with strategies and help so they can succeed in school. On-going support is provided by the Social Worker and Volunteer Coordinator.
Major Responsibilities:
- The Volunteer meets with the child at least once a week for 1-2 hours or as otherwise agreed upon in advance with the Volunteer Coordinator and Social Worker.
- Observe agency rules of confidentiality; report any possible child abuse/neglect concerns to the access unit at 929-3400 and then to the Volunteer Coordinator.
- Report progress monthly to the Volunteer Coordinator and Social Worker on the forms and postage-paid envelopes provided or by email using bsecure.
Volunteer Activities Might Include:
- Assisting/encouraging/acknowledging the child’s performance in school – help with homework.
- Works with an assigned tutee/student to provide assistance in one or more academic subjects.
- Assists a student to develop a better understanding of in-class and homework assignments.
- Coaches the student in identifying resources to complete assignments
- Reviews completed assignments and suggests ways to improve or supplement assignments.
- Provides positive feedback on the student’s progress and encourages the student’s continued focus on academic excellence.
Volunteer Qualifications:
- Be at least age 18.
- Be reliable & consistent.
- Hold a valid driver's license if they’re going to transport clients.
- Liability insurance if using their personal vehicle.
- Pass a criminal and traffic background check.
Reimbursement:
- FDL County strongly encourages the use of County vehicles.
- If a personal vehicle is used, the volunteer will be reimbursed for their mileage at the current rate. To receive reimbursements the volunteer must fill out and return the appropriate form(s) to the Volunteer Coordinator.
- The volunteer is not to accept pay or gifts for their services from the client or their representatives.
