Volunteer: School Based Mentor (Big Brother or Big Sister)

School Based Mentor (Big) is matched with elementary-aged child (Little) at a school near their home or work. These one-to-one "matches" meet weekly during the school year. Weekly meet-ups last 30-45 minutes and occur only during school hours, on school grounds, typically over lunch or recess time.

Matches get to know each other and develop their friendships through various activities such as board games, cards, puzzles, coloring and more. Program provides games & other materials in mentoring boxes at each school location.

By having another positive role model at school, the child's social, communication, and friendship skills often improve.  The Littles always look forward to the day their Big comes to see them!

For this program option, you must be at least 16 years old, have a valid drivers license and auto insurance.

Volunteer: Help translate Refugee Parent Education Videos in your language! Virtual Opportunity

U.S. Volunteers only, please

Parents from refugee and immigrant families in the US want the best Help translate Refugee Parent Education Videos in your language for their children and they work hard to provide their children with every opportunity to succeed. However, refugee and immigrant parents carry the extra stress of parenting in a new culture, while also navigating complex systems in a new country and language they might not feel confident in.

Please note that we do not work with volunteers who live outside of the U.S., as knowledge of local culture and resources are an important part of the role.

To best support parents, Catholic Charities has a series of parenting videos in refugee languages about topics that are important to parents from refugee and immigrant communities. These short, practical YouTube videos offer accessible parenting education in 10 languages. Our YouTube channel has over 2,600 subscribers who actively watch the content we release on parenting, updates to immigration law, and education.

How you can help

You can help Catholic Charities make culturally and linguistically appropriate videos by volunteering your critical language skills! We need volunteers to translate text (on PowerPoints or short scripts) and/or record voice over videos like this in refugee languages.

Check out our videos on Parent Teacher Conferences and Your Health Care Options to see what videos are like. The videos are approximately 3-7 minutes in English with 7 or fewer PowerPoint slides. Video text is usually short phrases related to daily life in the US accompanied by images. We create the PowerPoint content with simple scripts for ease of translation.

We can train you in our simple process to record short videos in your own home or you can come to our office to record. If needed, our Community Educator will even join you via zoom to record together for the first video(s) to help you get started. CC will edit the recordings (bloopers happen!) and post online.

Skills/ Experience

Fluency in your language and English

Parent Video Language Needs (bold are priority)

Pashto, Dari, Ukrainian, Rohingya, Karen, Hakha ChinSomali, Malay, Burmese, Swahili, Spanish, Arabic.

No certifications are required, but experience interpreting or translating in the community Can work independently; however, also willing to ask questions as needed Must be 18 years old to volunteer

Technology & Space

Ability to use Google Slides and Zoom (create free accounts) Have access to a computer and reliable internet if recording at home Have a quiet space to record without background noise or willing to record at our office

Time Commitment

2-8 hours per month, ideally 1-3 videos We work with your schedule- Volunteers wanting to record in our office must be available Monday-Friday 9am to 5pm, but those recording or translating at home can do so at any time

Training

Volunteers will receive training before they begin on how to access materials. If recording, volunteers will learn how to record voice over PowerPoint videos using zoom, how to upload recordings to our shared Google Drive, and general best practices for recording.

The Impact

While refugee and immigrant parents are passionate about their children’s education, many believe they cannot effectively help their children with homework or in other areas because they grew up in a different educational system and/or struggle with English themselves. These videos allow parents to learn the skills they need to parent in the US on their own schedule without the added burden of transportation to a class or childcare. While some videos have Milwaukee specific content, most are general enough to support refugee and immigrant parents across the US.

All of our programs are free to our clients, and we couldn’t provide the level of service we do without the help of our wonderful volunteers. We believe the connections between our volunteers and program participants make our communities stronger and more vibrant.

No certifications are required, but experience interpreting or translating in the community Can work independently; however, also willing to ask questions as needed Must be 18 years old to volunteer

Time Commitment

2-8 hours per month, ideally 1-3 videos We work with your schedule- Volunteers wanting to record in our office must be available Monday-Friday 9am to 5pm, but those recording or translating at home can do so at any time

Technology & Space

Ability to use Google Slides and Zoom (create free accounts) Have access to a computer and reliable internet if recording at home Have a quiet space to record without background noise or willing to record at our office

U.S. Volunteers only, please

Parents from refugee and immigrant families in the US want the best for their children and they work hard to provide their children with every opportunity to succeed.

You can help by making culturally and linguistically appropriate videos by volunteering your critical Ukrainian language skills! We need volunteers to translate text (on PowerPoints or short scripts) and/or record voice over videos like this.

Volunteer: Help Educate Medicare Beneficiaries in WI

The SMP program offers volunteers an opportunity to make an important difference in their communities throughout Wisconsin.

Thank you for your interest in the Senior Medicare Patrol volunteer program. As a volunteer, you will play a vital role in the overall success of the Wisconsin SMP. The information that you will impart as a volunteer will help seniors in your community to become better health care consumers. Together we can inform and empower Medicare beneficiaries, their families and caregivers on how to protect, detect, and report Medicare fraud, abuses and errors. By volunteering, you will have an opportunity to use your talents, skills, and networking to provide outreach and education on Medicare fraud in your community. Volunteer involvement ranges from distributing materials, staffing a booth at conferences and outreach events, to giving group presentations. A description of these three activities is below.

Information distributor: As a distributor, you help to transport and distribute SMP information materials to various sites, kiosks, or senior centers throughout your community where information resources are made available to residences. In this role, you do not need to engage in discussions with others about personal information or situations. However, you simply note all questions or comments and give them to the Volunteer Coordinator for follow-up. Exhibitor: As an exhibitor, you help to staff an informational table or booth at community events such as senior resources fairs, wellness expos, health workshops, conferences, civic or faith-based organizations, food pantries, libraries, or non-profit agencies. In this role, you provide information about the program to the attendees and answer basic questions related to how to prevent, detect and report Medicare fraud, abuse and errors. Presenter: As a presenter, you give presentations about the fundamentals of SMP to small and large groups. The role includes the opportunity for you to interact with the audience. If time allows, additional interaction will occur through Q & A and discussion at the end of the presentation. The presentations vary in length from 15 to 60 minutes. Depending on the time allotment and the audience, the presentations may involve a PowerPoint presentation, or an engagement activity called The FUNdamentals of Patrolling Health Care.

All positions require some training and an orientation. Training is provided both in-person and online. We want to provide you with the information and background you’ll need to be knowledgeable and capable of responding to questions from members of the community. The last two roles also require a background check.
